Understanding when to send employees and applicants for testing can be confusing at times. However, proper classification of reason for testing can be very important and effect compliance for some programs. Testing solution your organization should select, among the following reasons for testing, the most common are pre-employment and random.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING

Is a company’s first line of defense to protect themselves and their business from the negative impact of drug abusers. The benefits of pre-employment testing can be immeasurable for companies of all sizes and in every industry. Whether your company is subject to DOT regulations or you are a private sector company, pre-employment testing is a great tool to help deter potential risk in the future.

RANDOM TESTING

Is a strong deterrent to drug users. By conducting testing on an unannounced basis it makes it difficult for the donor to substitute or adulterate a specimen.

PERIODIC TESTING

Is generally used to maintain compliance with contract requirements. However, periodic testing can be included in any safety program as an added level of protection.

POST ACCIDENT TESTING

May vary by company. Testing is generally conducted after an accident, meeting specific company or DOT criteria. Testing is used to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident. Some examples of criteria include any accident resulting in a fatality or injuries that required medical assistance, police citation or damage to a vehicle or property.

REASONABLE SUSPICION TESTING

An employer can require an empoyee to submit to an alcohol or drug test when the employer has reasonable cause to suspect an employee for drug use. The employer’s determination that reasonable suspicion exists can be determined by various indicators including appearance, speech, erratic behaviors and body odor.

RETURN TO DUTY TESTING

Can be included in any program, however, it is mandatory for employees who have previously tested positive for illicit substances or refused to take a drug or alcohol test while performing safety-sensitive functions regulated by DOT.

FOLLOW UP TESTING

Company policies vary regarding follow up testing program requirements. Follow up testing requirements are determined by DOT regulation or company policy.

BREATH ALCOHOL TESTING

Some of the dangers common to alcohol abuse include impaired judgment and coordination, falling asleep at the wheel and aggressive outbursts. These behaviors will eventually hit the system, in the form of health care costs, legal expenses, increased insurance claims and premiums, with both health and motor vehicle, and workplace productivity. We provide you access to multiple drug and alcohol panels with lab-based results offering both traditional CCFs and Electronic CCF’s.

METHODS OF TESTING

URINALYSIS

This form of testing detects recent or new drug use, typically within 1-3 days. Suitable for all testing reasons and detects the broadest variety of illicit and prescribed drugs.

ORAL FLUID

The next most common screening method used by employers and detects recent drug use in the previous 24-48 hours (24-36 hours for THC) and is suitable for a broad range of testing reasons. Used primarily to detect illicit drugs.

RAPID SCREENING

Offers an initial result within minutes. A presumptively-positive drug test result rendered by an instant device requires confirmatory testing by a laboratory.

HAIR FOLLICLE

Provides a much longer “detection window,” giving a more complete drug-use history that would show a pattern of repetitive use as far back as 90 days.
